Smallworlds
Expedition
“our
human-ess is imbedded in the land”
Ric Careless
Executive Director, BC Spaces
for Nature
The Smallworlds Expedition takes an intimate look
at the colourful and heart-stirring world of the people
who trek through rugged terrain, battle with behind
the scenes lobbying, and take to the streets and media
in efforts to protect their awe-inspiring lands.
The Expedition joins the lives of
six outstanding conservation groups chosen from the
Smallworlds Network to represent each major continent
and display contrasting biomes, diverse ecosystems
and approaches to conservation.
It dives in to unearth the way these
conservation groups are formed and how they work.
How do they endure? What is it that makes them efficient
and what are the similarities and differences between
them? How do location, culture, local policies and
contrasting eco regions affect the tactics used in
their campaigns? The Expedition also asks; Who are
the people preserving the land, what is their background,
and what drives them to work for the benefit of us
all?
The explorer, Smallworlds Founder
Amanda Gomm, takes a full participatory role to bring
these groups into a real life context for the many
who do not know of their existence and their fundamental
work. She joins their efforts through active participation
in community outreach, field work, meetings and observes
their lobbying efforts; documenting both her experiences
and the threatened landscapes. With the help of an
interactive web cam, kids, youth, parents, individuals
and teachers can all connect directly with the six
chosen organizations, as well as Amanda. They are
invited to create and enjoy a personal experience
with the local people online, bringing those who are
fighting for the earth's survival straight into their
living rooms or classrooms.
The Expedition hopes to serve as both
an educational and inspirational medium to its audience.
It wishes to show the strength of the grassroots by
sharing its experiences in magazine articles, documentaries,
and lectures for both a targeted and a general audience.
It hopes to give conservation work a cultural face
and help aspiring conservationists shape their dreams.
